I studied with Cherry the last 3 semesters of my 4 years at Eastman (1969-73). I liked Cherry very much and we remain friends to this day. My understanding is that he just simply retired. He would have to be in about his early to mid sixties now. He has always been very strong and healthy and I believe he just wanted to retire while he could enjoy it. He taught at Eastman for approx. 20 years and played in the RPO for approx. 30. That's plenty for anybody. He's a sweetheart of a guy and a great musician/tuba player.
