The missing guards are part of making the instrument lighter in response. In my opinion it takes the bass quality out of the sound. That is why I opted for the 981 concert model. I do agree in evaluation of the not too happy craftmanship by B&H. The threading of the bottom valve caps its not good on my 981. But still it is a marvellously sounding instrument. My B&H Imperial baritone with he same problems is still at its peak now 32 years later, so I do hope the 981 will last my time out.
