My understanding is that Gene is terribly afraid of accidently damaging the York, and that he therefore doesn't travel with it, especially for private enterprise. Also, if he did a recording on his own, then the CSO's insurance might not cover the damage if something happens. Based on how much they paid Mr. Jacobs for the horn, I imagine that Hirsbrunner bundle of brass seems good enough for the task, and presents a manageable risk.

And then there's the issue of wear and tear. We have heard reports that the CSO York has been buffed out. A *lot*. The symphony might be afraid to let their investment be subjected to non-symphony wear, or Gene might be afraid of the same thing in their behalf.
