I didn't read any other's answers, but you are correct about the monetary or implied "qualifying" value of your diploma.
The purpose of a performance degree program is for YOU to become a superb performer. No degree in ANYTHING is a "ticket to work". I only pay attention (when hiring) to what people can and will DO, and NOT AT ALL where they have "been".) If you are the MOST SUPERB performer available (AND a nice guy) you will work as a performer.
THOSE THINGS are up to YOU.
P.S. Your being discouraged is your own personal decision, too.
