Actually the horn could be a BBb 'Monster' as easily as it could be an EEb. The catalogs from the 'teens show the 'Monster' in both keys (also as available in CC) and states that all York basses (as they called tubas mostly then) were fitted with the patent high/low pitch slide arrangement. Our community band owns a BBb York 'Monster' with the slide arrangement. It really is pretty neat, but you need to remember to pull all the branch tuning slides out to the scored lines (as a starting place) for low pitch.
