Take it from one who has always had grander ideas about his worth and job description than his bosses: He who has the gold makes the rules. The leader of a music group gets to be the boss.
I once hired professionals create a brass quintet to do a wedding gig for a friend of mine. I told them that it was my gig, therefore they had to do everything in their power to keep me from looking like a fool. I would practice my head off in return for their respect of the situation. Did they have to be submissive to the needs of that ensemble? Yes. Did they have to be submissive to the needs of the leader? Yes. Did I appreciate their professionalism? Absolutely. Did their checks bounce? No.
Pros can be mercenary without guilt, no matter what their field.
