A good method book isn't just a collection of notes written in various combinations in different keys. I should be a logical progression taking you through specific fingerings, slurs, harmonic series, rhythmic exercises, etc. that are designed for the intended instrument.

To acheive what the author intended, you should use trumpet fingerings regardless of the key of your tuba. Middle C=open; D=1-3; E=1-2; etc. If you want to go back later and play concert pitch or do some serious transposing then go right ahead. A little extra work never hurts. Just keep in mind that this is outside of what the author is trying to teach.
