Actually, most of my auditions were like that...they had to be. My local municipal band holds them once per year, but it's a sightreading audition. They grab the most difficult, obnoxious piece they have for your instrument and have you run it once. (They also try several other, simpler pieces to check tone and such under "normal" conditions.) They absolutely refuse to tell anyone what is on the audition list.

The have good reason, though. They have a ten-week season. Rehearsal is on Monday, show is on Wednesday and Sunday (plus any "specials" for the week). They need to know you can work that way. Sadly, I only sightread well with bass, not tuba, even though I'm getting better at it.
