Kalmus' clefs are sometimes illogical. For instance, on many occassions I've had alto clef 1st parts (Kalmus ALWAYS using alto clef in first parts) with 3 and 4 ledger lines below the staff.....bit of a pain and for me, illogical. When I complained about this to a bassoonist, they said the same thing, tenor clef parts with a heap of ledger lines. Now, as for what you said about avoiding ledger lines, experience tells me that sometimes that just aint so.

As for the alto clef for alto 'bone thing, There was no way that Bruckner for instance used altos in Vienna but still, Kalmus prints the first parts in alto clef. By 1850, Vienna had swapped to using three tenor trombones, ousting the alto and G/F/Eflat bass. Just one example of possible hundreds.
