Hi. Jack Tilbury, here.
Some time ago, I posted a message announcing tuba auditions for the Army Band. This was to advertise an opening in our Ceremonial Band. The tape deadline is Oct 1, 2000. I just found out today that we will also have an opening in the Concert Band. Mike Gallo has decided to retire. This means that we will be trying to hire two people in this upcoming audition. Here is the way it will most likely work: We will have an audition for Ceremonial Band first. The top two players will be offered a job with our Ceremonial Band. If they accept the job, they will have a chance to then audition for the Concert Band opening along with the players who are currently members of our Ceremonial Band. We have never done it this way, before. This is a new policy that Col. Lamb, our new Commander has started. The bottom line is this--we will be hiring two players, one of which might end up in the Concert Band. At the very least, two will have a job in the Ceremonial Band.
If you know of anyone who would be interested in these jobs, please encourage them to apply. Right now, the Army (and only the Army) is offering a college loan repayment program. It basically means that if you do one enlistment the Army will pay off all of your student loans up to $65,000. Also (and this part could change) the Army has been offering signing bonuses on top of that. These signing bonuses have been as much as $6,000. The last two tuba players we hired, Tom Bratten and Sean Chisham, got these bonuses. Sean was able to sell his Hirshbrunner, take the money from his bonus and buy a new Yorkbrunner. All of this only requires one enlistment. It is a great opportunity. Starting salary once you complete Basic Training is $30,250 - $34,700.
Here, again, is the original vacancy notice. It doesn't mention the fact that we now have two openings and it doesn't mention that one of them is in the Concert Band. Please pass it along to anyone you think might be interested.
