Speaking of high school directors: See how often you get that "deer in a headlights look" when you ask how to play a BBb tuba part on an Eb horn. The general musical populace have a problem accepting that we really do learn multiple sets of fingerings as opposed to having transposed parts. A local JrHi director asked her elementary feeder school to stop starting kids on Eb as the band parts were all for BBb (since he does not have any BBb horns he gave up on tuba players altogether. I firmly believe we need to do a better job of presenting the tuba, especially to those in the profession (band directors). Bell, Phillips, Pilafian, and others have opened the doors. We need to walk through them and show that the greats did not show the limits of the tuba, They demonstrated the possibilities!
