We did the "Survivor" two seasons ago in a similar situation. Our conductor programmed the Schoenberg, followed immediately by the complete Mahler 2nd. I really like the pairing but it made for a very long concert. He also wanted no applause between the two works but he also didn't want to break up the Mahler with an intermission. We ended up doing both pieces without pause which was something like 100 minutes. Down here, that is a long time for folks to sit even though I think the idea worked artistically. Having the beginning of the Mahler after the ending of "Survivor" was VERY effective, almost like a real death and transfiguration.
