2+4 is the proper fingering for C# (CC tuba) or B natural (BBb tuba) below the staff on many 4 valve tubas and also for the very F# (CC tuba) or low E BBb tuba).

3+4 would just be a horribly flat version of the horribly sharp low F or low Eb mentioned in the first sentence.

Could it have been that this fellow had 5 valves, rather than just 4, and that some of these combinations utilized a 5th rotor that you did not notice?
