I have often read that sharp rims help clean attacks, and that may even be true for trumpet players. But I have made lots of mouthpieces for myself over the years and have never found that sharpness of the rim had any effect at all, except for discomfort, which leads to less practice time, which leads to you-know-what. I have also heard it said many times that a shallower cup can raise the pitch of your high notes. I hoped that might be true when I purchased a Weril a couple of months ago, because the open high C on those horns is flat. I was using a fairly deep mouthpiece. So I tried an unusually shallow mouthpiece which I rarely use because it is too bright. The pitch problem was not measurably affected.
