A slightly different situation happened, at least according an urban legend of my youth, in Sweden.

A young composer, who thought of himself as a great conductor, had been allowed to testplay one of his scores with the local symph. Seeing only two players in the horn section he exclaimed:

I most specifically ordered 4 horns, as they are so crucial to the texture of my piece!

The first horn calmly replied: Please don’t worry. We are both playing double horns!

And then there were no more complaints towards the horn section for the rest of the rehearsal.
