Great story, Mike. Reminds me of a story told to me by Joe Alessi Sr. (formerly 2nd trumpet Met Opera Orchestra). I played some concerts with Joe a few years ago, and I walked in one night with my Benge short-model D trumpet. He said the short D was a favorite of Wm Vacchiano (formerly NY Phil principal), but that a guest conductor asked Vacchiano not to use those "sissy little horns"------use a big Bb or C instead. Vacchiano "complied" by using a long-bell model D, and the conductor was pleased that the "proper" big instrument was being used.
