I know Nicholas Temperley. He was my research methods instructor at the University of Illinois during my masters degree. His was the toughest class I ever took. He is a world class Berlioz scholar and he also had a hand in the Barenreiter(sp?) critical edition of Berlioz's complete works. If he says that the scoring is a certain way, that's good enough for me!
I couldn't agree more with Carl about being a smart player. As a performer, I feel I must pay respect to the composer's will when rendering his work. It certainly is a difficult enough proposition in many cases. I'm happy to see that more and more, we're abandoning the higher/faster/louder value system for the historically accurate value system. Imagine that, tuba players becoming competent, sensitive ensemble players. What will they think of next?
My opinion for what it's worth...
