I have heard it demonstrated and declared by a personal guru of mine, Denis Wick. Not that he recommended this technique, but he referred to it as a common approach by Eastern European trombone players, at least 30 years back from now.

DW’s personal sermon, which is now my personal gospel, goes along the substitution of the t’s and d’s known from general attack techniques by l’s and r’s, when it comes to a gliss-free legato.

From my own hard earned experiences with tensions in the glottis/larynx area I can only give one advise: Stay away from any experiments with using the glottis as a factor in controlling lower dynamics and note stops.

Concentrate on controlling the interaction between your outer abdominal musculature and your diaphragm. Large muscles, controllable muscles. Used by singers through centuries.
