Joshua,
I think there are mostly advantages. An instrument with a removable bell automatically has a relatively heavy connecting ring in the bell which would acomplish the same thing as the one in the celebrated Meinl Weston 2165. Furthermore, it is much easier to give a tuba, particularly a BAT, a bath if you can remove the bell first. As a repairman, I can perform most if not all bell de-denting without having to unsolder and resolder your bell, and it therefore costs you less. Finally, I've found that it's much easier to lug around a BAT, or even a 4/4 tuba, in two cases than in one. The only disadvantage I know of is that it costs a little more, mostly in labor, to make one, which is probably why most tubas don't have a detachable bell.
