Let me assure you it doesn't get MUCH better AFTER you have the gig, either. After you've played the Nutcracker 500 times, orchestral playing doesn't hold the charm it once did. I don't want to sound like a jaded old fart, but there is quite a bit of pedestrian playing one does in an orchestra. The skills necessary to WIN the job are MUCH higher that is required to PLAY the job. For every Bruckner 4 we play, we play three pops concerts. for me, i get the most enjoyment in a job well done, after that, for more musical interest, I have a brass quintet, I do some conducting and play some solo gigs. This is where you really get to stretch out and make the most of your musical ability and training. Do the excerpt for your job prep, but play MUSIC for your musical and spiritual enjoyment.
