The best thing to do is take the horn to a repair shop and let them work on it. The results will cost far less, assuming the repair person knows what to do, than trying a home-made procedure.
If you really want to learn the trade, go to a repair school and then you will know how to fix stuff like that. As a repairman, I have seen just about everything and still get surprised by the latest "accident". I went to Allied Music over 20 years ago and the year I spent has been well worth the time and money.
My opinion for what it's worth.
