I have had teachers on both extremes. Some are always trying to be encouraging, while others are never pleased. Personally, I much prefer the latter. Audition committees are more ruthless than any teacher. They tell everyone except one person to go home and don't come back. Second place is also the first place looser.
A good defense against nerves is a good offense towards aggressivelly building up your abilities. If your teacher says something is missing in your abilities, right now, than (s)he is probably correct. Take the advice, no matter how humbling, and use it to your advantage.
