kidding aside, I came up with as close as I could manage to a 1/4 tone scale on a tuba that I used to own, so that a friend could compose some pieces for tuba using that language. I performed both works in a couple of recitals...This was almost a "quarter" of a century ago, btw.

I also developed another "trick" for one of those pieces: He wanted a "true" glissando from the middle range up to the very high range. I discovered that if I pushed down all 5 valves (making the partials as close together as possible) and SANG perfectly in tune with and syncronized with a "rip", that the singing would reinforce (and amplify the sound of - "between" the partials) the vibration of my lips causing a "true" glissando to occur, rather than just a "rip"...Try it sometime.
