Would that we had superb technicians like Doug and Matt out here on the West coast! Ultimately, hauling the beast out for some serious scoping out by the brass genius pool may well be the best measure. It'd be a shame to dump a classic horn like this. One thing I note is that the leadpipe on this tuba is extremely short--less than 11" from the tip of the receiver to the 5th valve ferrule. Doubtless this has something to do with the intonation issues. I wonder if the 4-valve instruments had fewer problems.

Those BBS-ers out there who have had 5th valves added to the leadpipe of your piston-valved instruments are the best ones to comment on what the addition did to intonation. It'd be interesting, because I don't think the subject has ever come up.
