I've seen this same phenomenon of how playing a bigger horn improves your air on a smaller one. Everybody should own a huge horn just for this experience!! Recently a friend of mine borrowed my euph for a few days, because he might want to play it in brass band instead of alto. (He is a French horn player.) The results were really remarkable...his tone on the French horn improved dramatically, and he even changed his embouchure as a result of the feel of a larger mouthpiece. He almost doesn't sound like the same player any more, and it's a huge improvement, just from playing a larger instrument.
