Aside from lower costs associated with machine made products, the main attribute is repeatability. When you compare comments made about Yamaha versus comments about Alexander, Yamaha is always given high marks for consistency. You may not like the product, but every one is the same. Mass production frees the company from depending on an irreplaceable master who makes exceptional instruments but can't make very many and won't live forever. Look at the price of a Fender guitar as compared to a Benedetto. The answer is that hand made instruments from highly skilled artisans will probably always beat mass produced ones because the artisan will not let the horn out of his hands unless it meets very high standards of fit, finish, and sound.
