It probably was Ron, and Ron was truly a great guy - I'll second that. I got to "hang" with him a bit in early 1981. He was still pretty new to the VPO at that point. He had a rather aggessive playing style that I rather liked. Not always techincally perfect, but sure exciting to listen to. I saw him in a rehearsal of "Miraculous Mandarin" one time (Bartok), and I was impressed that he referencing the score from time to time. Yes, he died way too young.
