Doug, we are not far apart from each other. Of course, the repertoire should not be limited to marches (that are artistically quite simple in most cases). There is a vast variety of possibilities to select suitable pieces from.
... and also, I agree, that rock and pop should not be excluded as well, but it's the ratio what I was critizising. The seal-on-land metapher was NOT quality related in any way. It was just to remind, that any kind of specialists are ususally performing great on their specialized field, but maybe must not necessarily match a different field so perfectly as well (in this case from the instrument configuration side - not from the skills side).
By the way, I love military brass bands!
