When I built mine, I put a 1.5 inch hole in the top and a moveable tuning sleeve (PVC). I found that I could keep pitch on the thing even in the pedal register. I used one of those old Tennessee Tech. aluminum mutes to start with, and got the sheet cork from the local music shop.
