The 163 is made in both CC and BBflat.
the 173 is a completely different horn, much larger,
I've only seen new 173's in CC. The current production 173
has the rotors next to the bell and most of the valve body tubing on the front.
It is a FANTASTIC horn with a huge sound and the fastest rotors
I've ever seen. With the rotors almost under the paddles,
the throw is incredibly light, short, and quick is an unfair understatement!
IMO the current 163 is a better all-around tuba bordering on the big side.
The 173 is a GREAT Kaiser-size tuba for large orchestral playing,
but for me would not be a 1-horn solution (again thats just me.)

does this help?
