In 1969 the CSULB Bands were under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds. I don't know who the tubist's were at that time. When H. Bob left to go teach at the U of M, Larry Curtis took over the band program at Long Beach (from teaching at Pasadena High). The tuba teacher at Long Beach at that time was Tommy Johnson (I studyed with Tommy starting in the Spring of '77). I didn't get to CSULB until the Fall of '77 (from Glendora High School) and when I did get there Jim Self wasn't teaching at CSULB any more. Steve Klein took over my first year at Long Beach as the tuba teacher. Roger Bobo had only been with the L.A. Phil for about four or five years at that point ('69) and Jim Self hadn't com into town yet ('73 or '74 I think). But, the bands at CSULB have always had an excellent rep.
