Of course Tony C would be the authority on this matter but I would think that after one:

pay musicians
pay music director
pay staff
pay hall rental (not sure if SJ has their own hall)
pay premiere players (soloists, etc...)
pay insurance
pay for music rentals
and pay any extranious expenses

then I think it would be pretty easy to rack up a large debt. More than likely, SJ has been operating on credit or operating on anticipation of an "up" season (advertising, subcriptions, donations, etc...) and by the time the realization that the money was not going to come in - there you have it.
