It's very common... or at least it used to be. All my horns are at least 50 years old and I've got one King 4 valve sousa, a Conn 4 valve sousa, two King bell-front front piston tubas, a Cuesnon tuba, a Conn upright tuba, and a Conn Pan-American sousa that all have tuning slides in the leadpipe. I like the tunable leadpipe so well, I installed one on a homemade helicon that was playing very sharp. These are all Eb horns. I would leave the knuckle alone unless you are interested in rehoning the valve casings.
