Jay:

The New Jersey Symphony played for the PBS broadcast of Andrea Bocelli's Statue of Liberty Concert in July of 2000. The performance took place at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, on the same stage that was used for the recent Verdi Requiem broadcast. Steven Mercurio, Bocelli's conductor for the concert, called ahead to the orchestra and said that he wanted cimbasso or bass trombone and NOT tuba for all of Bocelli's tunes. So, Pat played tuba on the orchestral openers that Macal conducted for each half (Smetana's "The Moldau" and Bernstein's "On The Waterfront" Suite) and I was hired as an extra to play cimbasso and bass trombone on everything else. You're right...the cimbasso was hard to miss. Somehow, in the main camera angle that was used, you see Andrea Bocelli singing on the left, Mercurio conducting on the right, and the bell of the cimbasso in the middle! I read in the paper awhile back that Steven Mercurio was interested in the Florida Philharmonic conducting job, so maybe you'll get plenty of opportunity to use your cimbasso. Hope that answers your question.

Dan
