I wonder if it's a combination of the two. If the aperature is small, then I would think that the effect of raising the tongue would not affect the timbre. However, if the aperature were open larger than the oral cavity, that might have more of an effect on tone quality.

The Ah-EE concept is widely taught and is basically the raising of the tongue.

Also, embouchure strength will contribute to smoother slurs. The practice of natural slurs, lip trills, and legato studies will contribute to a stronger embouchure.

This is one of those things I think you are better off not thinking about too much and training your muscle memory to do correctly through repetition.
