It was my understanding that the painting Mussorsky was depicting was of an oxcart, perhaps with a pesant rider. Is this not correct? The ponderous bass line depicts the cattle (or oxen) pulling the cart. The cart comes closer to the audience and continues away, hence the dynamic variation (soft to loud to soft).

Btw, Chester Schmitz has said something along the lines of, the part says tuba, so I play it on tuba. And Chester was the BSO euphonium player, so if he wanted to get the doubling rate, he could have played it on euph. I think he used his B&S F (later in his career) or his Alex 6-valve F (earlier) on the solo.
