I had a different reaction to the original post. I think the point was that all too often we say things like "support the air with the diaphragm" or do this or that or the other with the diaphragm.
But the diaphragm is not what a lot of us seem to think it is and so when we talk about how to "use" it we are actually off base and misleading ourselves and others.
And (as you suggest) we should be talking about the object that we're trying to achieve and not dragging "the diaphragm" into the discussion.
Anyhow, I think the original post was intended to make it clear that we should basically quit talking about the diaphragm itself because we tend to get it all wrong.
