One more small point - it might be easier for a European company or American company to have stuff made in China than for a Japanese company.

One of the perpetual problems we face in moving manufacturing to China is to get the Manufacturing Process Instructions (the operator's "bible" that details all the steps they have to perform) translated into Chinese.

We haven't yet found anyone who can do a credible job of translating the Japanes directly to Chinese, because most good Chinese manufacturing engineers speak English and not Japanese.

So we translate everything to English and then get the English re-translated to Chinese. I'm sure you can imagine the errors that creep in and how hard it is to get these instructions certified - same problem for getting feedback to the Japanese engineers or to update a spec. We have to allow three to six months on the front end to get this translation done and debugged and certified before we can really even start operator training.
