She probably saw her distorted reflection in the curve of the bell. As she approached closer, the hideous "monster" she viewed in the bell probably appeared to be attacking you. Be grateful that she was willing to sacrifice her own life to save you from such an attack!
My dog once took a different approach. He just sniffed the mouthpiece and "marked" his territory -- and yes -- I found out about it the hard way!
