The 982 used to have a smaller mouthpiece receiver also, so you needed to use a smaller european shank mouthpiece. (Denis Wick models without the "L" suffix). The smaller receiver is approximately bass trombone sized. I do not know if the 982's are still that way or if Besson changed to the larger receiver on recent models. Someone with more recent experience with the horn could say. But it something to check into if you are considering the 982. I would go with the 981 personally. I too had a 981 leadpipe put on my old Boosey & Hawkes 982 and the low register just opened up incredibly and the response of the whole horn improved. I did have the leadpipe mounted off the bell too which may have helped a bit also. Ken Amis of the Empire Brass plays a 981 I believe.
