A slightly shorter alternative would be for Mary Ann to engage Mark Nelson as her mute assistant, much as a pianist might have a page turner. Dr. Nelson could stand and insert the mute with a flourish. I have a mute in candy apple red, although it was for a 4/4 Rudi so probably won't fit in the 184.
