We're thinking oppositely. To me, when the bell is "suspended in air" it means that you are carrying the tuba by the body, while nothing at all is touching the bell. My recent custom case debacle was the opposite...the only thing held firmly in the case WAS the bell, and I thought that was a recipe for disaster, to the point where I did not take the tuba with me on my trip and returned the case for a 30% loss.
If you hold the tuba firmly by the body, you can whip it around quite a bit without hurting anything; but if you hold it by the bell....it won't take much to have a twisted mess on your hands. I want my case to hold firm to the body, not the bell.
