Your 3+1 bass still might be engraved 982, but with the leadpipe exchange it effectively is a 981.
It makes sense to own a 981 as well as a 983, as they are very different. Myself I only have the 981 in Eb (the Conn 26K does not count in this context).
If I want to use something lighter than the 981, I have to take the somewhat bigger steps to euph or bassbone.
