Don't get discouraged. You may not get a full time orchestra gig right off, but there is plenty of part time work out there. It may not be Mahler and Bruckner every week, but it can be very satisfying. Many performance guys get a teaching job near a large city or university in order to pay the bills and continue to gig. It may not be what every tuba player dreams of, but it can be a decent living. The real trick is to find time to play and practice while teaching. It can be very precarious and extremely stressful.
