Well, here's my two cents: the less likely you are to be able to make a living in any particular discipline, the more likely you are to have scholarship money available. I had full tuition scholarship when I was a music major, and then when I went back 15 years later for my BSEE, I STILL got a full tuition scholarship, but it was to play in the orchestra. Much more dollars per hour than working at McDonalds's or doing work study.
And, of course, I make about 10 times as an engineer as I did as a musician.
