A friend of mine spent over a decade attending college, nearly always part-time.
By the time he got done, he had more experience teaching, arranging, composing, and dealing with band kids than others who were under consideration for a school job, and he got the gig. The other guys had master's degrees and had taught high school before, but he got the gig simply because he was better qualified.
I can't really say that a music degree should be earned by zipping through in four years. I've seen enough kids get done that still had a lot of maturing left to do.
Of course, that could have been because of my college, too.
