There is an quote about fighter pilots that applies very well to tuba musicians:
"Long periods of boredom interrupted by brief moments of shear terror!" There can be many more "perks" that come with a community symphony gig. I go to rehearsals and learn how the conductor "hears" the music, how my colleagues execute it and listen to how the piece comes together, even those pieces I'm not playing. If you have an ipen mind you can learn something from every experience you have in life.

I once had a new music piece that had 5 notes that any beginning player could have handled - but the University flew us all to San Francisco to perform it at Davies Hall. I played my 5 notes with great pride and really enjoyed the trip.

Remember - you are a tuba slut - if there's money involved, your body's for hire. This means having to work through the Dvoraks to get to the Mahlers.

Just my thoughts.

Roger
