In the summer of 2002, I played two (AT)CMC. I'll just put it like this:

Bright to Dark: (Not good or bad, just preference)
983 - PT22 - 3400

Evenness of Tone:
1.)PT22/3400 (pretty close)
2.) 983

Flexibility:
1.) 983
2.) 3400
3.) PT22

High Range:
1.) 983
2.) 3400/PT22 (pretty close)

Low Range:
1.) 3400
2.) 983
3.) PT22

Focused to Broad: (Not good or bad, just a preference)
983 - 3400 - PT22

By the way, I've had a 983 for about 4 years now and have played a number of 3400's. Play them all, see what fit's the sound in your head. Then the amount you have in the bank. My opinion may be swayed, but for the price you can't beat a 983.

Just my 2 cents.
