Well, I'm not a proffesional tubist, but I belive that you would get very bored by just playing the music you get in the band, orcestra etc. etc.
Thats why I think we all need some time in our practiserooms playing something different, like a solo pice, eaven if you don't get to do it in front of an audience

I may be wrong, but I think it's to heavy to play any solo piece on a 6/4 CC orcestra tuba, so thats why someone choses a smaller tuba to have some extra fun on.

There are also many amateurs chosing to have two different tubas.

And to your last question: I am under the impression that Øystein Baadsvik, the norwegian solo tubist, draws audience from near and far, both tubists and non-tubist, when he is holding a concert.
