The school is indeed very expensive, but you get what you pay for. (all private schools are expensive!) I believe that much or all financial assistance at NU is need based, and how much you get also depends on how many other students are accepted that year. I also believe that there is more assistance for undergraduate and doctoral level than masters or certificate level students.

The tuba studio there is outrageous and Rex is quite an inspiration, both as a player and as a person. Chicago is still "Tuba Mecca" for obvious reasons, and there are many other world-class players and teachers to learn from there as well. The overall standard of legit brass playing is probably higher in Chicago than anywhere – it is amazing to be part of that, if even for a little while. Even going to hear the CSO on a regular basis is an education all on its own. If you get in, you should go. It will be a life-forming experience no doubt.
